Anime Review: The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

tmohs.jpg

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya follows the life of Haruhi Suzumiya, a young and very active high school girl and the life of those who are caught up in her tricks. While Haruhi is the central character to the plot, the story is told from the point of view of Kyon, one of Haruhi’s classmates. In her twisted way, Haruhi drags Kyon in creating a high school club named the S.O.S Brigade. Eventually, Haruhi forcefully drafts Kyon, who only stays in the club to protect other helpless victims of Haruhi’s “voluntary arrests”. As the story prolongs, Kyon finds that each of these supposedly “helpless victims” has a specific reason to be there.

Haruhi Suzumiya beautifully blends the genre of science fiction in a comedic frame that makes it one of the most original anime out there. Even though the script mainly focuses on the two main characters (Haruhi and Kyon), you cannot help but to feel attached with the other characters that later joins the show, especially the poor, helpless Asahina Mikuru. This is definitely not your typical high school anime. It is quite deeper than that as we gradually being to understand Haruhi and even sympathize with her despite her devilish acts. The animation is superb and fluid and carefully maintains the emotion of the characters without being too serious. Furthermore, I found the dub version quite likeable and impressively acted but some people might rather watch the original Japanese, which is fine since it is equally well preformed. Another final note is that don’t judge the anime solely on the first episode, give it some time and you will be dragged to the show just like Haruhi’s helpless victims.
