Lost Finale

Warning
Below contains spoilers from the season finale of Lost. Read at your own risk.

Tonight was a good night to stay home and enjoy the flood of season finales from major TV shows such as Lost and American Idol. I didn’t really care about American Idol (although I was flipping back and forth) because I was thrilled about Lost and to get some of the questions answered. However as usual, that didn’t happen; in fact, it left me with so many unanswered questions instead. Here are my thoughts:

• Although there weren’t major death counts as was promised but Charlie’s death was the biggest of them all even though we have seen that coming according to Desmond’s visions. I wished they killed Locke instead of Charlie.

• Apparently, Jack’s flashbacks that manifested tonight’s finale seemed to imply that those flashbacks are actually events that happened in the future. It seems Jack, Kate, and the others have indeed got off the island and returned home. Thus, I would assume that the upcoming seasons of Lost would state the story of the survivors post the island’s events. That means the island will no longer be the main setting of the show anymore.

• However what about Ben’s warning to Jack regarding communicating with the people of the boat? Are they bad people?

• At the Looking Glass Station when Charlie contacted the boat, I was surprised that Penelope (Desmond’s ex-fiancé) was the person to receive the signal. It seems she was searching for Desmond all the time. However, when she denied that she doesn’t know who Naomi is, I was baffled. Who is Naomi anyway and why she said that airplane of Oceanic 815 was found crashed somewhere?

• Finally what is the situation behind Walter’s surprise appearance? And what about the big statue of the foot with the four toes that was revealed during season 2 finale? And the black “foggy” monster that killed Ico?

Again too many questions than answers and we have to wait until February of next year to get some answers. In the mean time, keep those Lost’s theories coming.

    I think the person Jack went to see at the funeral home is Sawyer. I just have a gut feeling that its sawyer in that casket.

    What about Jack referring to his father, who is supposed to be dead, in the future scenes who now seems to be alive?!

  5. LOST last night was a great season finale! Definitely some wicked mind games. Haven’t quite figured out where they are going, so it has accomplished it’s goal. That is -keeping me tuned in when the next season starts. I liked the end. I have been reading that the castaways are in some kind of weird time loop maybe. Because remember when Charlie heard that the computer was programmed by a musician? Like some kind of weird Deja Vu?

    i think kate ment sawyer when she said ‘ive got to go, he’ll be wondering where i am’ at the end. i think its dhamer in the other boat. i expected the final scene to be of a helecopter landing and the japanese bloke off the videos to get out. not looking to happy either. micheal and walt must be on the island still coz the only way off is on the sub, not a small boat. the finale didnt answer any questions at all. very good tho and i cant wait for season 4.

    I don’t think so since the last scene with Jack and Kate, she said “He’s expecting me.” I bet she was talking about Sawyer.

    @N.

    But it’s a damn good show 🙂

    @Cixousianpanic
    It’s an eternity that what it is.

    @Jw
    That’s a clear example of the unanswered questions that I was talking about.

    @Bill
    A time loop? That’s an interesting theory. Yes, the finale was really good and I hope the show keeps its momentum.

    @Marzouq

    I still recommend LOST to anyone and I believe you will get hooked all over again after the finale of Season 3. There are some great awesome episodes in Season 3 but some others you don’t really see the points. So yes, go and burn LOST DVDs…believe me…it’s good.

    I think the person in the coffin is Locke since he’s the de facto new leader and probably responsible for the delay in everyone’s rescue.

  14. So damn confused over the whole finale show. MY how did John get shot so many times and live.. were those blanks??? Sheesh and YES I assumed that they made it off the island.. but the whole cast is living in Hawaii still and filming there. The island is not over yet! The litle boy could that have been EKO re-incarnated or something.. It sure was not the kid that got away on the boat with his father..they never did tell us what happened to them and they said they would.. This show SUCKS at letting us know things for sure.. I continue to tape it and try to take it apart to figure it out though. : (

    well… Locke only got shot once, and it was in his upper arm…so i think that is why he didn’t die. Also I think that Sawyer and Kate are married in the future, and that the coffin was for either the older black woman,Rose.. or for michael/walt? unless eko and/or his younger brother are some how still alive. orrr maybe the coffin is for Ben? It’d have to be someone pretty unpopular, since no one came to the viewing.

    The boy who appeared to Locke was most likely walt.. you can’t forget it’s been a couple of years since the start of the show, and the poor boy is smack dab in the middle of puberty. hahah

    I hope that charlie didn’t actually die. even though even if he didnt drown..Mikhail’s grenade probably killed him. (or maybbbbbe it allowed him to escape. hehehe)

  16. Because Jack refers to the need to go back to the island to Kate, I think not all of them got off the island, hence Jack’s sense of guilt. Maybe Kate, Jack and some others somehow cut a deal with the people that arrive on the boat. I also think the person in the casket may be Kate’s mom.

    Sawyer is in the casket i think he screwed kate over and that is why she doesn’t want to go the funeral maybe she was pregnant afterall… Charlie is dead…maybe… I think that not all of them got off the island and that is why jack wants to go back… ben is crazy and maybe “jacob” is his split personality…. who knows… i love this show!

    Hey, well at first I wasn’t following the flashes of Jack’s life at all lol, I assumed it was previous to the Island, I then had thought it was the woman he saved in the casket because she had died in surgery but then confused that no one had gone then the last flash back just knocked me completly out of whack. I was also shouting at the tv nearly for Charlie to open the door and get out because I really didn’t want him to die, I mean why lock yourself in!?!?! Also the question is raised what is happening to the Others? I mean the most important ones got killed at the beach and they have Ben hostage! Can’t wait for Feb!!

    it was ben in the coffin. jack didn’t heed his warning about the danger of calling in that copter, something bad happens to a bunch of the castaways, he feels responsible.
    kate always hated ben, tho, (wanted to kill him earlier in episode) and thus the pointed response of ‘why would i go to HIS funeral?’ to jack.
    just a theory.

    interesting, but I don’t think you really grasp whats going in the show?
    How were you baffled when penelope appeared? we know she’s been searching for desmond all along, and that she is super rich. Walt is a manifestation of the island in Lockes subconscious.
    And I don’t think there was any “implying” that Jack’s flashbacks were indeed set in the future, that was quite quite obvious

    I think the person in the coffin is juliette bcoz jack gt so upset with the death and kate wudnt want to go c juliette for obv reasons!! I also think that kate had to get back to sawyer…but the thing that confused me was that in jack’s flashes (in the future) he referred to his dad as still being alive!!!
    Quote: “well u go up there and bring my father down here and if im more drunk than him u can fire me!” (nt exactly rite)
    and this is the same flash as in the future!! maybe his dad did nt die and he really was standing on the beach like a million episodes ago…??

    Another insane plot cud be that it was the past and they re-crashed and forgot they were there the first time!!! who knows apart from the writers???

    But my main point was that his dad is alive in the so-called future!!!

    the black smoke the island and anything like that are all jacob though ben says he can talk to jacob he really can’t and i believe that is in direct correlation with walters appearance

    and what niome said about flight 815 already being found was reaffirmed by lockes dad

    I think Jack’s comments about his Dad were just drugged out ravings. It was in the future and he was trying to pretend his Dad was still around to justify his drinking and drug problems.

  29. about the casket : with 3 more seasons to go, I think the person in the casket is someone we haven’t even been introduced to. It could be Ben for all we know, turning good and saving Jack for some reason.

  30. Not a CHANCE the next series will be based off the island…

    The fact is, theres still stuff that needs to happen. We KNOW they’ve contacted someone off the island, but we also know those people weren’t sent by Penny – so who? Ben comments suggest its something else (Dharma?) – this all needs to come to its conclusion.

    I can visualise some ridiculous scene with Desmond running along the beach shouting “Nooo!” to Jack as he’s talking on the Walkie Talkie. Maybe they’ll realise and allow Ben to turn some sort of jamming signal on?

    Either way, I’d be very very suprised if this was the end of the Island!

    I think it was Locke in the Casket. I think he left the island, became paralyzed once again and committed suicide. I think Jack was so depressed because he finally realized that Locke was right. The Island was his destiny. Also, I think Jack would resent Locke’s death because he was the one person who would want to go back to The Island, which Jack obviously does as well.

    Here we go, no particular order. Remember Desmonds vision. Claire and the baby get off the island because of Charlie dying, so he sacrificed himself to ensure that.
    Naomie said Oceanic 815 was found with everyone dead, bt didn’t Lockes dad say it was deep in a trench and only seen by remote subs. This must be a set up by the all powerful ohers. The person who answered the phone to Jack answered as Bucholski (or something like that) Sounds awfully military.
    The time loop is starting to make sense, maybe Jack wants to go back to the island because he thinks he can fix things. It would allow them to explain an awful lot.

    Some musings…

    1. I think the people on the boat will be Dharma – I agree with Marty that they will likely have some military link, how else would they have battled with the “hostiles” in earlier flashbacks?

    2. Did anyone notice how flashforward Kate had few visible freckles? Could be she did a deal with Dharma / others to return to civilisation under an alias which would explain why she is a free woman.

    3. Jacob said to Locke, “Help me”. Could Jacob be a prisoner of the island, using the black smoke to find someone else to take his place? Maybe that is why it takes the place of those who the Losties care for or have some inextricable link with (Jack and his father, Locke and Walt, Eko and his brother)?

    4. I wouldn’t worry about the guy in the coffin – methinks there will be many more deaths when the boat people reach the island…after all, the cast needs to make room for some newbies

    5. All I hope is that Walt’s reappearance won’t signal a return for Michael.

    6. Any guessing that Penny’s dad has something to do with Dharma? Would explain how Naomi got a picture of Desmond and Penny, and don’t forget he also had some links with the British Army (Desmond was dishonorably discharged). He is also, lest we forget, very rich indeed

    Any in agreement?

  34. Posted by CStorm on May 29, 2007 at 2:29 pm

    Penny’s dad for sure has something to do with the island, maybe even dharma. remember the scotch that he drank in front of Desmond that Charlie gave him ON the island??

    No idea who the person in the coffin is, perhaps Ben makes the most sense if no one showed up.

    I wonder where in the world Jack and Kate were when they met in the future. The whole “golden ticket” thing is quite bizarre really. That means that Naomi might be lying about the boat and finding the Oceanic flight with all dead passengers.

    I didn’t want Charlie to die, and I wonder about death on that island, what is death there and why are so many people that should be dead still alive like Michal (the russian), Locke and whoever. So maybe Charile will be ok.

    I still need to know these things:

    Polar Bears??
    Black smoke and Jacob?
    What is Dharma for real and what is the island? Is it a time warp, hell (like lockes father implied) or some sort of magical place where people can heal when they tune into the island like Locke? Not everyone has that gift (like Ben) so it’s quite peculiar. Maybe it’s the afterlife in general? Maybe it’s a place where people can have a second chance…too many questions

    Next season off the Island? Why? They flip from Island to the real world, and from past to present to future. Why would it be any one place?

  36. Posted by Id on May 29, 2007 at 9:26 pm

    Here’s some support for Ben being in the casket: Jack is clearly obsessed with returning to the island. Jack may see Ben as the only one who can get him back there, and would therefore be distressed to the point of suicide by his demise. Also jives with Kate’s relative indifference to the death.

    I have a lot of trouble coming to terms with the incredible stupidity of the others who still follow Ben’s orders right up to the end. It’s clear he is running a few palm-trees short of an island.

    Oh, and raise your hand if you didn’t see Sawyer murdering Tom a mile away? Sawyer’s quickly becoming the cold-blooded killer he always wanted to be. Hey, my mommy always told me I could be anything I wanted when I grew up. It’s kind of inspiring…

    Oh yeah, and our dear friend Penny – She said she wasn’t on a boat. But she certainly was in the Season 2 finale, right? And another gripe – couldn’t Charlie at least *tried* to swim out the hatch window and up to the surface? He didn’t have to stand there like a goon and act like drowning is a happy peaceful death. If Heroes teaches us anything, it is that you can have a finale that wraps up all the major story lines while still leaving plenty of opening for the next season. Lost should take a few tips from them…

    Charlie didn’t try to break out because he wanted to make sure everything happened exactly as Desmond’s vision – he was afraid that if he departed from what was “supposed” to happen, Claire and the baby wouldn’t get off the island.

    Lost is quite frustrating and I’m not sure it will be worth the effort in the end. All I can say is that if I wasn’t able to download all the episodes off the net, I wouldn’t bother watching it on TV.

    Why does Charlie have to match Desmonds vision? He didn’t match it previously and Naomi still parachuted in. If I was Charlie I would say – “The visions don’t seem 100% accurate. lets just play it by ear…”

    Reply

  41. aye, but Jason, you’re not Charlie, are you brotha?

    Ben in the coffin would make the most sense. he was Jack’s way back to the island. and remember, the funeral director asked Jack, “friend or family” and Jack answered “neither.”

    great finale…certainly gets you stoked for next season. favorite moment: Hurley on the walkie telling Jack he saved everybody.

    I think they did all die in the plane crash in the real world and the island is some sort of limbo. When the return to the real world, time is reversed to before the plane crash, but their memories of the island remain intact.

    In the coffin, how about Locke? They hated him, but Jack for some reason regrets that he did not heed his warning about leaving.
