Mid Night Craving

519dnpztyhl_aa280_pibundle-4topright00_aa280_sh20_.jpg

I just made a comment in Marzouq’s post regarding how I beat the mid night crave with Kellogg’s Red Berries cereal. I mean just last night (11ish) when I was watching The Holiday on DVD; I suddenly got the urge for something sweet. In few minutes, I made myself a bowl of cereal with skim milk and resume watching. Not only it filled me up nicely but also got some good nutrients. If you don’t see this brand in your local community Supermarket in Kuwait, then I suggest to go to Sultan Center and snatch a box for yourself. Believe me, it’s worth the trouble.

Shop To Rejuvenate

Last Friday roughly around 2PM, I was bored as hell. Everybody was gone home and those who are staying here were busy with the May summer session. Without even realizing, I got dressed, armed myself with my trusty iPod and went to the bus station (Yes, I don’t have a car). Luckily my campus ID also works as a bus pass, so I took the bus and head to the mall because I was so depressed that I had to shop. It took only 20 minutes to get there and the bus ride wasn’t bad at all; it was very cozy and very different compare to the one I usually take to campus. As soon I arrived there, I hit the shops hard. Went to the GAP and Old Navy for casuals and then to Abercrombie & Fitch and a quick stop at Express Men and Banana Republic. I didn’t like Ralph Lauren summer selection but managed to find couple of casual polos. Finally I stopped at Gamestop and got me a PS2 component cable and a copy of Odin Sphere. By 4:30PM, I was starving so I stopped at Red Robin and had the new Grilled Chicken Bruschetta sandwich; it was a damn good sandwich Finally, I went to watch Pirates of the Caribbean and then went back home.

It turned out a good day that day and it seemed all I needed was some “me time.” I really love to shop whenever I feel down; it really boosts my self-esteem. You should know that if I want to shop for clothes I usually shop alone, but I make an exceptionally good assistance buyer. I have keen eye on what looks good in a person. Sometimes, I wish shopping was a sport.

The First Final Fantasy: Crystal Bearers Trailer

Finally Square-Enix decided to shed some light to the one of the most anticipated Wii title: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers. I liked the original game that was released on the Gamecube but this one seems to have more depth and a great single-player campaign. Currently, there are no words about the online multiplayer and how the remote controller would be implemented to the game. I bet more news will emerge on this year’s E3 that will be held on July.

PS: Is it me or the intro song seems to be inspired from “Titanic”?

Review: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

photo_04_hires.jpg

First, I would like to say that if you haven’t watched or even have forgotten the content the last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies then you would not understand one single thing moment from this one. Luckily for me I saw the last two films very recently so I was able to enjoy the movie and understand what is going on. You can easily argue that At World’s End is probably the weakest of the trilogy as the movie is very slow, convoluted, and way too long to bear. The last two Pirates movie were long but I honestly didn’t get a hint of boredom, but this one, you can feel the three hours as sometimes you get confused on what is happening. The movie does however keep its unique humor throughout the movie, and the new characters and the old minor ones have become more interesting where some of them actually took a significant aspect of the plot. The returning of Captain Barbossa (played by Geoffrey Rush) is certainly welcoming; in fact, I think his character is more humorous and lovable then Jack Sparrow this time around. The plot is good but less entertaining than the last films mainly because it gets confusing as the movie progresses and sometimes the characters’ development becomes uncanny. However, this will be all forgiven when the climatic “maelstrom” scene kicks in toward the end of the movie. It certainly one of the most satisfying action sequences in the Pirates series. The movie’s visuals and costumes are also very well made and the soundtrack is remarkable and engaging. The ending has few surprises but quite fulfilling to say the least; although one can easily argue that a 4th sequel is possible.

Pirates of the Caribbean delivers a mixed bag of everything good and bad. It has stunning visuals, wealthy amount of characters, and a great atmosphere but unfortunately it fails to capitalize all of this in a solid package. It has good moments though but the three hours might be too long to fully enjoy it as it was meant to be. If you have seen the last two, then go see it as a matter of respect.

Soccer X Comedy

My friend sent me this video the other day and I couldn’t help but to laugh my heart off (yes I chose to say heart instead of ass). Some of the content of this video are simply hilarious and others are literally jaw dropping. Who knew soccer can be so funny?

Review: Pokemon Diamond & Pearl

6787_large1.jpg

Honestly, I didn’t want to write a review for Pokemon Diamond & Pearl because I know nobody in the blogsphere will actually care to know about the latest installment in this million dollar franchise. However, after locking more than 120 hours playing this game since it was released in late April, I felt compelled to jot down a review. It is safe to say that even after 10 years since its creation, the concept of Pokemon still remains addictive and surprisingly fresh.

pokemon-diamond-20070307043841477.jpg

As any previous Pokemon game, you play the role of a teenage boy or a girl in a quest to become the Pokemon champion by collecting monsters, battling with trainers, and defeating the gym leaders. Mind you that there is a story in the game but it is undeveloped and lacks substance, mainly because the concept of the story has already been made in the past Pokemon games and this version brings nothing new to the table. However, Pokemon games never were story-driven games but its well-established formula is enough to keep you going no matter what.

The gameplay still follows the “if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it” adage where the formula remains unchanged since the old days of Pokemon Red & Blue. You basically start with a starter Pokemon of three types (Grass, Fire, and Water) and then develop your own army of creatures by capturing them in Pokeballs and then leveling them up and evolving them to much stronger beasts. The battle system also remains unchanged but it is still simple and intuitive. You really have to consider developing a diverse team of different types of Pokemon with different types of attacks, and that is easier said than done especially if you are into competitive battling. The main story is designed for an 8 year old to beat (although there are some tough challenges) but when it comes to battling other people, the true nature of Pokemon games arises. There are 493 Pokemon to choose from, each has its own distinctive characteristics and abilities that makes choosing the right Pokemon for your team a challenge. Capturing Pokemon is also another story, which some of them can only be caught at certain time of the day cycle (for example, some Pokemon only appears after 7PM and others in the morning), and others only evolve in certain methods or following specific rules. Finding all the Pokemon and filling your Pokedex is definitely not at easy task especially if you don’t want to cheat using an Action Replay or other cheating devices.

The graphics are nice and colorful and they have this unique hybrid of 2D-3D elements. They don’t match Final Fantasy III level but it is quite easy on the eyes. However, the battle animation didn’t change that much since Ruby & Sapphire. The sound sees a better improvement though. The music is not annoying as it used to be and you will find yourself humming some of the songs while you play this lengthy game.

However what makes this version of Pokemon exceptionally good and satisfying is the introduction of the online gameplay. You can easily connect with other people online and then have a quick battle session or a trading session to fill out the empty slots of your Pokedex. Both sessions are voice-chat enabled so you can even talk with the other player even if he or she was in another country or region. You can visit a place called the Global Trading Center where you can offer your Pokemon to trade for another Pokemon you want, or searching the Pokemon that you want by browsing other people’s offers. This online feature makes this installment of Pokemon worth playing. And the fun doesn’t stop there. There are tons of side-quests and events that you can undertake anytime you want and most of them are unlocked after you beat the main story of the game. You will find new places to visit, new Pokemon to capture, Pokemon Contests to participate, and an Underground Areas to explore. Also, you will unlock a place called the “Pal Park” where you can easily transfer all your Pokemon from the third generation to Diamond and Pearl. This game is destined to be in your DS slot for eternity.

They say Diamonds are forever and this seems to apply to Pokemon games as well. Whether you are a recent newcomer or an old veteran, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl will devour your time fast. However it is unfortunate that a well-established formula still has a weak story for the player to actually enjoy but this soon will be forgiven after few hours of Poke playing. Whether you hate Pokemon or not, this franchise is destined to stay longer than any game franchise on the market. Give it a try.

Lost Finale

Warning
Below contains spoilers from the season finale of Lost. Read at your own risk.

Tonight was a good night to stay home and enjoy the flood of season finales from major TV shows such as Lost and American Idol. I didn’t really care about American Idol (although I was flipping back and forth) because I was thrilled about Lost and to get some of the questions answered. However as usual, that didn’t happen; in fact, it left me with so many unanswered questions instead. Here are my thoughts:

• Although there weren’t major death counts as was promised but Charlie’s death was the biggest of them all even though we have seen that coming according to Desmond’s visions. I wished they killed Locke instead of Charlie.

• Apparently, Jack’s flashbacks that manifested tonight’s finale seemed to imply that those flashbacks are actually events that happened in the future. It seems Jack, Kate, and the others have indeed got off the island and returned home. Thus, I would assume that the upcoming seasons of Lost would state the story of the survivors post the island’s events. That means the island will no longer be the main setting of the show anymore.

• However what about Ben’s warning to Jack regarding communicating with the people of the boat? Are they bad people?

• At the Looking Glass Station when Charlie contacted the boat, I was surprised that Penelope (Desmond’s ex-fiancé) was the person to receive the signal. It seems she was searching for Desmond all the time. However, when she denied that she doesn’t know who Naomi is, I was baffled. Who is Naomi anyway and why she said that airplane of Oceanic 815 was found crashed somewhere?

• Finally what is the situation behind Walter’s surprise appearance? And what about the big statue of the foot with the four toes that was revealed during season 2 finale? And the black “foggy” monster that killed Ico?

Again too many questions than answers and we have to wait until February of next year to get some answers. In the mean time, keep those Lost’s theories coming.

Netflix Member

netflixenvelope.jpg

An empty summer break will make you do all sort of thing just to feel “alive” again and in my case; I decided to become a Netflix member. There are so many movies I have missed on the last couple of years so I’m kinda excited that I have become a member. I’m expecting the new movies to arrive to my mailbox tomorrow. So expect a galore of movie reviews from moi; however, those reviews will be short and thorough. Surprisingly, they also have a decent collection of anime movies and TV shows so that’s a plus. My cousin was surprised on how on the world I have survived without becoming a member in any DVD rental store.

My Friends’ Quotes

7618000060.jpg

I always laugh whenever my friends state their famous quotes. They are hilarious in their own ways and some of them you need to be there to really appreciate them. Those are the first ones that I rushed to my head.

•    “And what should I say”
•    Translate it to Kuwaiti dialect. Her Kuwaiti mind is always on even when she speaks English.

•    “Offff Basss Tara Etnarfez”
•    Means “Oh stop it! You are nagging me.” You have to see her face when she says that.

•    “Can I have Tobacco please?”
•    My friend meant to say “Tabasco”. We always tease him about this one.

•    “Ya 6a83an!!”
•    Means “You FART”. This is his trademark insult.

•    “Waaaaaaay Ambaaaaaaay.”
•    The Kuwaiti expression of “No Way!” The way she says it is pure “sassy Kuwaiti girl.”

•    “Mat7es Sa3at Enek Mat7es?”
•    Means “Don’t you feel that sometimes you don’t feel?” Very philosophical don’t you think.

•    “El-bond elle benna covalent mo ionic!”
•    Translates “ The bond between us is covalent not ionic.”

•    “Life is a bitch.”
•    My cousin says that whenever feels that life is a…well…bitch.

•    “La ter7am wala et5alee ra7mat allah tenzel.”
•    Translates “ So you don’t mercy and you also don’t let God’s mercy to be bestowed.” My mom said this classic quote to my science teacher at Parent’s Day criticizing him for tough exams.

My Collections

I felt like posting about my personal collections of videogames and books library. I know the pictures ain’t that good but it is something. For a clear view, make sure to click on the picture to enlarge. My friends love to browse my library every time they stop at my place. They say that they always find something exciting or new on every visit. Please note that my collections are missing many books and videogames as some of them are either lent or back home. Note that my book collection is categorized by size and videogames collection is categorized alphabetically.

My Book Collection

books.jpg

Approximately I have lent half of my books collections to some of my friends and couple of book series are back home. As you can see I am a big fan of fiction novels, and most of them are very…ahhh what’s the word for it…”literate.”

My Wii Collection

wii.jpg

I only have 7 games so far even though I missed couple of games. Not bad for a 6-month console I believe. Of course, Zelda is the best game so far.

My Gamecube + PS2 + DS Collection

gc.jpg

You are witnessing to a very high quality of videogames. As you can see, I wasn’t joking when I said that I am a major RPG fan. Most of my Gamecube games are back home and some of my PS2 games were sold or traded. Anything strike your interest?

My Strategy Guides Collection

guides.jpg

Honestly, the reasons that I buy guides are because I feel that I have to collect them or to make sure that I have completed the game 100%. Sometimes, I buy a guide just for the maps especially for games like Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda; they come quite handy whenever I feel frustrated or don’t know where the location of a particular item or event. I often buy a guide after I have completed the game after a first round and want to get everything in my second round such as Resident Evil and Silent Hill games.
